Physical Education Procedures
Start of the Period-
Enter the gym or health room and go directly to your assigned spot or seat. If you need to drop any items off on the stage, such as sweatshirts, do so before going to your spot or once you have started your warm up. Stand ready to receive instructions. If Mr. Burns is busy, wait quietly for instructions. Most physical education classes will start with a jogging warm up, followed by stretching. When beginning your warm up, walk straight forward to the sideline, then begin your laps. When your laps are completed, go directly back to your assigned spot. Do not sit or bend over. If necessary, rest your hands on your head.
Ending of the Period (Dismissal)-
Always wait for Mr. Burns’ instructions to end the class. Listen for directions until you have exited the gym. Mr. Burns will instruct you on how to get to the east sideline of the gym. Once there, stand on the sideline, facing the north wall with the flag. This line is preparing you to enter the hallway, therefore you should be standing at a 0 voice level. Do not forget to pick up any items you may have placed on the stage during PE.
When you are Late-
It is important for you to come to PE class on time. If you enter late, please be sure to see Mr. Burns immediately so you can be marked present for the period. When arriving late, you should have a pass from the place you are coming from. If lateness is a consistent issue, it will be investigated to determine if you are abusing another school rule.
Bathroom-
Most classroom teachers take a restroom break before specials. It is expected that you have used the restroom before you come to PE. Most classroom teachers also use the restroom after specials also. If you can wait until after specials to use the restroom, it would be appreciated. If you do have to use the restroom during PE time, raise your hand and ask to use to restroom. Mr. Burns will use his best judgment to determine if you will be allowed to use the restroom. If Mr. Burns grants you permission to use the restroom, use the exit on the east side of the gym to go to the restroom. Go directly to the restroom, use the restroom, wash your hands, go directly back to the gym, and join the rest of the class.
Emergency Alerts-
If there is an emergency alert (fire, tornado, or lockdown), stop what you are doing, look at Mr. Burns, and wait for instructions. Do not begin to line up until the teacher gives directions to do so. Once the class is lined up, the class will move quickly and quietly to the class’s designated area. Once the class is in its designated area, attendance will be taken. The students are required to answer with a loud affirmative of their presence. Drills will be taken seriously, as it is practice in the event there was an emergency.
Going to the Office(medical or otherwise)-
Your teacher will use his judgment when a student asks to visit the office. If he deems it a valid reason to visit, permission will be granted. Immediate permission will be granted in the event of a visible medical symptom.
Injury and Medical Release-
If another student becomes injured, your encouragement is appreciated, but please let Mr. Burns tend to the injured student. Do not attempt to help the injured student to their feet or move them in any way.
If a student is injured in PE, Mr. Burns will tend to the student. The severity of the injury will be assessed, and appropriate action will be taken. If the student is injured in a way that prevents the student from returning to the classroom, someone from the office will assist the student to the health room. If a student falls, bumps into someone, or is hurt in some other way, the student has the option to sit out for part of the activity. The injured student is expected to rejoin the activity when the pain subsides.
If a student is injured outside of the school or is sick, the student will be expected to participate if the student does not bring a note from a doctor that states a restriction on physical activity. In the event the student does not have a doctor’s note and a physical condition is apparent, Mr. Burns will determine if the student will participate in PE.
If a student brings in a note of restriction from physical activity from a doctor, the student will not be allowed to participate in PE. The student will not be able to participate for the dates stated by the doctor if the note gives a specific range of time. If no specific range of time is given, the student/parent must bring a medical release to the school office from the doctor who issued the restriction once the doctor has cleared the student for physical activity.
When a School-Wide Announcement is Made/When the Office Calls-
When a school-wide announcement is made, students will stop what they are doing, get quiet, and listen for important information. Many times school-wide announcements are made to let students know about after school activities or bus route changes. It is the student’s responsibility to listen for information which pertains to them.
Returning to a Task After an Interruption-
After an interruption of any kind, students are to immediately return to the task at hand.
When the Teacher Needs your Attention/Quieting the Class-
When the teacher needs your attention, he may use a variety of techniques to get students’ attention. Clapping, rhymes, asking for your attention, and raising his hand are all ways Mr. Burns attempts to gain your attention. If clapping is used, make sure you only clap with Mr. Burns or in chorus with the rest of the class. If a rhyme is used, please only respond in chorus with the rest of the class. If a student is not in chorus with the rest of the class, the student is trying to draw attention to themselves. This is inappropriate.
When the Whistle Blows-
When Mr. Burns blows his whistle, stop, look, and listen. Stop whatever activity you are doing. Look at Mr. Burns. Listen for instructions.
Listening to and Responding to Questions-
If you have a question, simply raise your hand and wait to be called on. Do not wave your hand in the air, snap your fingers, or make any other noises. Your teacher will not call on you if you do. Just because your hand was in the air, doesn’t mean that your teacher has seen it. Keep it up until your teacher has time to come to you or until he has verbally recognized your need for attention.
If one of your classmates has a question, listen to it completely. It may be something you may not have thought about, or it may answer a question you have yourself.
Raising Your Hand-
If you need something from the teacher (help on an assignment, to use the bathroom), quietly raise your hand. Do not yell out your teacher’s name, snap your fingers, or get up to go to the teacher. Teachers are very busy people. If your teacher does not see your hand immediately, wait until they do. There may be times when the teacher does see your hand, but cannot get to you right away. Please continue to be patient. Just remember how much patience is required to be a teacher!
Saying “Please” and “Thank you”-
“Please” and “Thank you” will be used when necessary. When you request an item or a favor from someone, be sure to use these phrases. It shows proper etiquette when you use them, and it increases your chances of receiving what you are asking for. The proper way to ask for something is to begin with “Please may I…”
